MISTA PIERRE
With a career spanning over 20 years, Mista Pierre is an open-format DJ known for seamlessly moving between multiple genres in one set, whilst maintaining a positive, uplifting vibe at all times. His palette is mixed with everything from house, salsa and afro-beat, to jazz, funk, hip-hop and soul. He’s schooled as a hip-hop DJ, so don’t be surprised to hear quick mixing, funky loops and hearty helping of turntablism as part of his set.
Mista P as he is colloquially known, was born in the London, to a Jamaican mother and a Guyanese father (South America) As a child growing up in Peckham, southeast London, he dreamed of being an orchestral conductor. It seemed a far- fetched idea for a small boy surrounded by the inner-city pressures and temptations.
And yet a conductor, if not in quite the guise he first envisioned, is very much what he became. His launch however, came to pass through the birth of hip hop.
He loved nothing more than to play on his father’s Crosley suitcase record player, and splicing songs using cassette tapes, mixing up sounds that soon saw him boldly entering into the dancehalls. The transition was quick and inevitable.
Bookish and bright, a bit of a C3PO, his thirst for music and DJ-ing saw him escape the call of duty, to gangs and drugs. His gang were to be revellers, and his arsenal were his beats.
To protect him further from possible nefarious influences, it was decided the best thing for him would be to go and stay with relatives in New York. This served as an opportunity as well as an amplified foresight with regard to the repercussions of positive and negative life choices.
Not limited by genre or by scene – he’d not escaped one ghetto to be placed in another – meant he could adapt to any setting, aware that he is still a pupil, that is forever learning. He knows that a great DJ is only as good as his last record, and that you improve by watching and learning from everyone.
“A DJ at their best knows it is not about him or her, it is about an exchange of reciprocal energies”
Knowing both what to bring the crowd while also giving them something unexpected, taking them on a journey that is unparalleled – this is exactly where the Mista Pierre places himself- the conduit between the decks and musical pleasure – at that invisible, paradoxical line between fulfilling yet subverting expectations.
